Hello friends!
I have to apologize for being silent on my blog for a few weeks! But 7 days ago, this lil’ wedding planner hopped onto a plane headed for the “Lion City”: Singapore, and it’s been quite an adventure so far!
It’s only been one week but I wanted to share with you the inspiration I’ve found from meandering through Singaporean streets. What I love about new countries is not only their different sights, sounds, and foods, but also their culture, their often different take on visual centerpieces, and also how some things are similar from country to country. Being in a new place also reminds me to always keep my eyes open, because inspiration is everywhere! I’ve found inspiration in an airport, on a shop in a street market, or even on the subway. Inspiration is often just waiting to be found… you just have to look for it! =D
So forgive me for this somewhat random collection of photos… but they are things that have either inspired me, peaked my interest, related back to weddings, or are just uniquely ‘Singaporean’ that I feel I must share with you! Indulge me, and .. enjoy!
Centerpiece from Hong Kong airport: You’ve seen bamboo in cylinder vases before, but have you seen cylinder-shaped bamboo?! I think not! I stood in front of this centerpiece for what seemed like hours in admiration. Thank goodness I had a nice long layover.
Wedding Jewelry at the Asian Civilisations Museum: If I was a bride from West Sumatra (that’s Indonesia, people), in the 19th Century, I would have worn wedding jewelry that looked like this! The ensemble features the enormous pair of bracelets covered in gold. Now that’s a blingin’ bride!
Beside the Singapore River: As I was strolling in the 97 degree weather with 98% humidity, (yes, Singapore is ridiculously hot and humid, ALL the time), I was struck by the beauty of this outdoor patio beside the river. Although Singapore is not the most ideal place to have an outdoor wedding because of the weather, this would be quite a lovely area to host a cocktail reception in between festivities. This ‘colonial district’ of Singapore has all of the best: beautiful architecture, tropical foliage and a river view!
Chinatown lanterns: One lantern might be beautiful, but take a hint from Singapore’s Chinatown: many pack a punch and create a visual masterpiece! I love the variety yet similar lanterns and shapes unifies the entire look. From this, take the reminder to not be afraid to use bold colors, use mass amounts, and have a little diversity! You might be pleasantly surprised at the beautiful outcome.
Orchids, anyone?: Beautiful in bouquets, in bridal hair, in centerpieces, or just in the ground, orchids are beautiful pretty much everywhere. In the states, it’s so hard to grow them, but here in Singapore.. they grow in abundance! Thanks, I am sure, to the consistently hot and humid weather.
Honeymoon in Sentosa: Forget Tahiti or the Caribbean, give me Sentosa!! People will love or hate this Singaporean island because on one hand it’s been transformed into a tourist trap, complete with Universal Studios Singapore and light shows and dolphin encounters, but on the other hand it still is… a beautiful, tropical, and somewhat secluded island. If you bypass the tourist-y attractions, you will still find yourself in unadulterated beaches with warm waters and cool ocean breezes. The landscape is gorgeous and the sand is soft. A great place to fall in love again, with the one you’re in love with already.
Singapore – thank you for feeding me with inspiration and beauty. It has been an honor walking your grounds!
